We have a new senior minister

Thanks to everyone for a great turnout at our congregational meeting last Sunday. The vote to call the Reverend Gretchen Haley as our new senior minister was a success. Gretchen will assume the role as senior minister on July 1, 2016 and the Reverend Howell Lind will continue as interim senior minister and she will serve as associate minister until that time.

The ministerial search committee thanks everyone for their participation and involvement in our intense process over the last 9 months.

We are excited about the future of our church and look forward to Rev Haley working with us to continue our 117 year history of being a welcoming community for a diversity of beliefs united in common purpose.

Congratulations Gretchen and thank you for accepting our call.

Your Ministerial Search Committee,
Ed Beers, Lyndy Latta, Steve Herbener, Sue Ferguson, Judy Gates, Julie Thomas

3 New FAQs added!

We’ve just added 3 new FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) to our site…..here they are!

  • FAQ 17:  How does Gretchen’s experience compare with that of other large church ministers when they were called as senior minister?
    • Answer:  Based on the information we found on the senior ministers in the 37 large UU churches in the United States, Gretchen appears to have very comparable experience.  Gretchen has spent 3 years with smaller congregations (Boulder and Carbondale) and 3 years as Assistant/Associate minister in a large church.  Of the 28 large churches for which we have at least some information and are not in search, five senior ministers (18%) had no prior ministry experience and 7 (25%) had some large church experience, mostly as Assistant or Associate Ministers. Twelve of the remaining 16 large church ministers came to senior ministry with a range of 5-14 years experience at small and medium sized churches in various capacities.
  • FAQ 18: I was surprised by the timing of the candidate announcement. Why was it so soon?
    • Answer: The MSC shared information with the congregation during the summer that should we have an internal candidate we would consider that candidate in the fall. We also shared that all considerations would be highly confidential and that you would only know that Gretchen had asked to be considered if and when we announced her candidacy. Our time schedule was designed to keep both the MSC’s and Gretchen’s options open. Should she have not applied or we not selected her – Nov 30 was the date to publish our Congregational Record for an external search. Should we not call Gretchen – Nov 30 would be the date she could possibly begin her own search.
  • FAQ 19: What are the appropriate roles for the MSC and the congregation during the candidating period?
    • Answer: Once the MSC has made a recommendation to the congregation their role shifts to advocacy for that candidate. They wouldn’t have recommended the candidate if they didn’t all truly believe the match for the congregation was right. It becomes their obligation to share as much information and answer as many questions as they can about both their process and their candidate. The role of the congregation is to secure all the information they need (read Gretchen’s website, attend a forum and read our FAQs & blog posts), attend the congregational meeting on Nov 15 at 10:30 am and vote their conscience and in the best interest of the entire congregation.

Be sure to check out FAQs 1-16 if you missed them! And join us for one of the 3 Remaining MSC Forums (10/31 at 1, 11/3 at 7, or 11/6 at 1) and mark your calendars for Candidating Week, kicking off November 8th and culminating with the congregational meeting and vote on November 15th!

We have a candidate.

From the Ministerial Search Committee’s Announcement on 10/18/15:

We join you this morning to reflect on the amazing process that we, as a congregation, have been through these past few months. You opened your hearts to us about how you treasure the congregational life we share together. You took our survey, you gave us incredible feedback, you came to our discovery sessions and talked passionately about your hopes and dreams for a new senior ministry. Intensive interviews with lay leaders created a blueprint of our leadership and administrative needs.

We spent hours distilling your input as we wrote the congregational record – a picture of us as we are now and our best attempt to reflect your hopes and desires for our common future. All through this time we tried to stay as objective as we possibly could.

As that portrait of our congregation became clearer, brighter, and deeper, the image of our future senior minister became obvious to us all.

We are thrilled to recommend to you The Rev Gretchen Haley as our new senior minister, and we will each share why:

Ed Beers

I was one of those who questioned if Gretchen had the experience and tested wisdom to be our senior minister. After all, she is younger than my youngest daughter. I knew she was a very capable and effective leader. I had a lot of respect for her, but I was skeptical that she could be senior minister – not now, but maybe in a couple of years.

However, it was pointed out to me that Gretchen is about the same age as Marc Salkin when we called him as senior minister. I also learned that Gretchen had started a company from the ground floor and grew it from one employee to 1200 employees in three states in a seven-year period. In conversation with the CEO and owner of several companies that included Gretchen’s company, he praised her leadership, strategic planning, and people development skills and told me we were lucky to have her. In fact, he said he hired her part time while she was in divinity school to develop and train leaders and executives in all his companies.

I got the same kind of feedback from UUA people in the Mountain Desert District. I could go on and on, but Howell only gave us three and one-half minutes.

Needless to say, I have changed my mind. I am convinced beyond any doubt that Gretchen is the right person to be our senior minister – not later, but now.

Sue Ferguson

When you asked me to serve on this search committee, I committed myself to being as objective as I possibly could be. I listened to you and worked with the team to create a profile of our best match in a minister. When I stepped back and looked at that profile, it was immediately apparent to me that we already had with us the person who was the best match.

We have seen Gretchen in action. She has served as second in command with 3 different ministers since she came to us. She’s served each of them and us with professionalism, exceptional skill and grace. She has lovingly helped us, as a congregation, through some difficult times. I can only begin to imagine what will happen when she takes the lead.

She is a person with the talent and ability to help us clarify a shared congregational vision. She’s got the drive and commitment to help us turn that vision into a realistic plan. And most importantly, she has the administrative ability to help turn our plan into collective action and to inspire us to achieve the future we want together.

In the website she created and the hours we spent in dialogue during her interviews, I saw a gifted spiritual leader with commitment to our UU principles, a dedication to cherishing our diversity of beliefs, and a true desire to accompany us through the good times and the bad.

She’s innovative and creative, she’s funny and easy to work with, and I love her sermons. Frankly, we would be fools if we let any other congregation have her as their senior minister.

Judy Gates

I didn’t know Gretchen very well before our discernment process. I agreed with many of you that she and Marc made a great, complimentary ministry team.

During the discernment process, I discovered her deep commitment to our church. She intends to stay with us for the long term and deepen our wider community relationships.

I was impressed with Gretchen’s willingness to learn, take risks, and adapt her ministry as well as her system-level view of church life, all skills we will take greater advantage of when she is senior minister. She enjoys brainstorming ideas in groups and then helping to make the most exciting ones a reality. She has clearly spent countless hours imagining the possibilities for Foothills.

Gretchen is realistic about her ministry and the needs of our church. She is committed to a big picture vision of a ministry team that, through complimentary skills and charismatic Sunday services, will enrich us all.

Finally, I am very happy that we will continue our tradition of having senior ministers who appreciate our diversity of beliefs and enjoy a good conversation.

Steve Herbener

During one of her interviews with the search committee, Gretchen stated, “I am a religious person.” I found myself thinking, “Now here’s a topic that the congregation would be very much interested in hearing more about.”

I then asked Gretchen to give more details about her statement. What happened next was amazing. Gretchen started speaking with a passion that I hadn’t seen in her before. She talked about how she loved her church and the UU faith. Then about how the UU movement was the best vehicle for reaching out and touching others. It became crystal clear that Gretchen’s purpose of being is not centered around any particular theology nor to evangelize the UU faith, rather it is to make a positive difference in the lives of people, from the individual level to the whole world community.

The conviction with which Gretchen spoke convinced me that she will fulfill this purpose, and it will be in no small manner! How fortunate I thought that we, a congregation full of people who want to make a difference, have the opportunity to choose a minister who is so well equipped to lead us in this endeavor.

Julie Thomas

Over the past six months, as we have worked together in service of the congregation, I kept an open mind and reserved all judgment as to who our candidate would be.

Of course, I knew all along that we might have an internal candidate, but I actually didn’t even consider whether Gretchen would be the right fit. I needed to hear your thoughts about what Foothills means to you, your needs, your dreams for the future.

As we created the congregational record and a profile of the minister we seek, based on the input we received from all of you, we recognized that Gretchen might be that person and invited her to enter into the interview process.

As I read the information Gretchen shared on her candidating website, I saw the possibilities of the new and exciting ministry that she envisions at Foothills. Over many hours in the interview process, we asked the hard questions, discussed our needs and dreams, and developed a more complete understanding of her experience, skills, knowledge and passion for Unitarian Universalism and for our congregation.

Honestly, I am blown away. Gretchen has what we need and shares our hopes and dreams. She’s demonstrated many of her skills and abilities, and as senior minister she will journey with us as we develop and live into our mission and future.

With enthusiasm I join in recommending the Rev. Gretchen Haley as our candidate!

Lyndy Latta

Throughout the intensive, eye-opening process that was “The Big Listen,” my focus, our focus, was on developing a deep understanding of our congregation.

I believe our commitment to that objective is well reflected in the process we engaged in and in the Congregational Record which summarizes it all.

I was blown away by the incredible, dynamic website Gretchen presented for our consideration, but what captivated me as hour after hour of our intensive interviews went by was the picture that began to form of who she would become in this new role.

It was quickly clear how Gretchen’s ability in growing a business to 1200 employees isn’t just impressive. It also reveals an exceedingly rare capacity for adaptation, a rare and impressive ability to evolve and develop new skills as our congregation will, inevitably, evolve and change over time.

These are just a few of the many reasons why I join with my fellow search committee members, today, in whole-heartedly recommending the Reverend Gretchen Haley as our next Senior Minister. The depth of our process and the clarity of understanding attained as a result make it clear that she is, indeed, “The One.”

IMPORTANT NEWS!

October 18, 2015

Dear Friends,

After carefully listening to you, our congregation, your Ministerial Search Committee (MSC) developed a ministerial profile based on all of the input we received from you throughout the summer. The key characteristics and skills you told us you wanted in a new senior minister include:

  • Intellectual and visionary
  • Collaborative and empowering leadership style
  • Approachable manner, with sincere concern for others
  • Large-church and change management skills that reinforce our deep sense of connection
  • Open minded and flexible
  • Sense of humor and humility
  • Ability to bridge diverse belief systems

It is our judgment that we have in our midst exactly the right person to meet our unique congregational needs. We are pleased to confidently recommend to you an incredibly talented individual.

It was our distinct pleasure to announce at today’s services that we have selected an amazing candidate for Senior Minister, our very own Rev. Gretchen Haley!

Rev. Haley’s seven years of ministerial experience include serving in two other UU congregations before coming to Foothills. Gretchen has been with us since 2012, first as Assistant Minister and then, after our call in February 2014, our Associate Minister. She helped us through Marc’s retirement and our transition with grace and intelligence. We already know well her preaching ability, pastoral skills, and commitment to our church.

Gretchen possesses a unique combination of Unitarian Universalist ministerial experience, educational training (two graduate degrees), and a substantial executive-level background in business that includes consulting experience specifically targeted toward leadership development and helping organizations deal with the impacts of change. The MSC is looking forward to helping the congregation see Rev. Haley in a new light, considering perhaps for the first time the possibilities unleashed by her tremendous talents, experience, and passion for service in the role of Senior Minister.

November 8th through 15th will be Rev. Haley’s Candidating Week. There are two main purposes behind the activities chosen for a Candidating Week. The obvious one is for us to meet and get to know the candidate. Equally important is the opportunity afforded the candidate to meet us and learn about our congregation. This will be an opportunity for all of us to get to know each other as we explore a new ministry partnership.

Our week of discernment will begin with Rev. Haley leading service on November 8 and culminate on Sunday, November 15, with Rev. Haley’s final candidating sermon followed by a Congregational Meeting. At that time our period of mutual discernment will conclude with a congregational vote on calling Rev. Haley as our next Senior Minister.

The MSC will be available during the coming weeks for further discussion and to answer your questions. Details will be forthcoming. If you would like Gretchen to meet with you or your group during Candidating Week, please be in contact with the MSC at searchcommittee@foothillsuu.org. We will be setting up the schedule of events for the week.

In preparation for the Candidating Week, we invite you to please take the time to visit our MSC website bit.ly/foothillssearch to read our Congregational Record (located under “The Big Listen” tab at the top). Paper copies of the Congregational Record are also available through the church office.

We strongly encourage you to explore the dynamic website that Gretchen created for her candidacy unleashingourfuture.weebly.com.

After you’ve taken a look, we are confident that you, too, will look forward to Foothills’ future in shared partnership with this truly gifted minister.

The MSC greatly appreciates the input we’ve received from our congregation and are proud to be part of such an engaged community. As your elected search committee, we are unanimous in our recommendation of Rev. Gretchen Haley as our new Senior Minister.

The Heart of the Matter — Part Two: Our Ministerial Profile

IMG_7013Our Ministerial Profile, below, is another key excerpt from our Congregational Record (CR). It defines the skills and characteristics we are looking for in our next Senior Minister. Also included below is our assessment of the congregation’s ability to exercise forbearance and nurture a minister’s development, as well as our description of what we believe would be the worst mistake a minister at Foothills could make.

Combined with the excerpts included in part one of The Heart of the Matter, these form the most critical areas of understanding that a member of the congregation should carefully consider as we move forward in the search process. Bear in mind that we feel these excerpts are the minimum information any member should review.

As mentioned in part one, we strongly encourage everyone to review the entire Congregational Record, which is a summary document based on all of the input we received over the summer during “The Big Listen. You can read the entire Congregational Record along with all data published from The Big listen HERE or visit bit.ly/thebiglisten.

We hope you will at least make time to read the excerpt from the CR below, as well as the excerpt previously published in part one of The Heart of the Matter.

PROFILE 1Excerpt from the Congregational Record:

These are exciting times at Foothills Unitarian Church. We are a vibrant, interconnected, and caring community just beginning to realize the possibilities in being a large congregation in a growing university town. Our senior minister of over 20 years recently retired, our most recent long-range plans have completed their course, and we recognize our numbers have outgrown both our organizational structure and physical facilities. Our members are exceptionally committed to their church and maintaining a strong sense of community.

Our new senior minister will enjoy working collaboratively with a large and engaged network of lay leaders who are eager to share our culture and traditions and then explore in partnership many possible new directions. As a congregation, we look forward to a new minister who possesses the broad skill set required to facilitate jointly developing and implementing a vision of who we want to be.

We are certainly not alone in Sunday services being the core of our community. Our new minister will continue our long history of thought-provoking, challenging, and inspiring sermons that draw lessons from all the major wisdom traditions and celebrate the congregation’s common values and large diversity of beliefs. Our highly intellectual tendencies are balanced by our great appreciation for services that emphasize spiritual growth, music, and humor.

On a personal level, we expect all of our ministers to be warm and approachable, able to relate effectively with all generations, and communicate in an open conversational style. We want to feel as connected to our minister as we do to each other.

Our new minister will embrace and strengthen our culture of collaboration and empowerment of the congregation, lay leaders, staff, and clergy. Ours is a highly participatory culture, and we are comfortable taking initiative, whether in our church leadership and committee roles or engaging in justice work. As we further embrace our large-church identity, we expect our new senior minister will help us retain this collaborative core while developing new ways to communicate and work in partnership.

We need a visionary leader for the short and long term to get to know us and our values, to help us define our future, and to inspire us to pursue it. She/he will help us complete and institutionalize the transition we have begun toward a culture of generosity and volunteerism that reaps the rewards of accomplishing our goals. Some specific tasks will be governance changes and mission articulation, as well as addressing issues related to growth, generation of a new long-range plan, and moving toward more efficient and effective communication models.

Foothills provides an exciting opportunity for a visionary spiritual leader energized by working with a variety of thinking, engaged individuals combining diverse perspectives and a passionate commitment to our community.

A summary of the characteristics we are seeking:

  • Intellectual and visionary
  • Collaborative and empowering leadership style
  • Approachable manner, with sincere concern for others
  • Large-church and change management skills that reinforce our deep sense of connection
  • Open minded and flexible
  • Sense of humor and humility
  • Ability to bridge diverse belief systems

Assess the capacity of the congregation to exercise forbearance and nurture in assisting a minister’s development:

One hundred fifty people attended our two-hour Discovery Sessions (focus groups). This question was an explicit part of the conversation, and as a result 89 comments were recorded. The comments clustered in four areas, Inclusion, Compassion, Engagement, and Honest Feedback, and demonstrated an awareness that successful ministry is a joint venture.

Inclusion – Welcoming and Inviting

  • We create structured ways to visit and get to know our variety of groups.
  • We reach out to make her/him feel welcome while respecting their need for privacy.
  • We don’t compare with previous ministers.
  • We embrace their family with a sense of welcome, belonging, and love.

Compassion – Kindness and Patience

  • We understand the role of the new minister will involve growth – mistakes will be made.
  • We recognize the humanity of our ministers, have patience, and are willing to forgive.
  • We remember that this is a process; it will take time for us to grow together.
  • We allow for making, breaking, and renewing covenants – “new start – open heart.”

Engagement – Show up and do our part

  • We all reaffirm our commitment to cooperation – ministers, staff, board, lay leaders, and congregation.
  • We extend offers to help and share our expertise.
  • We educate ourselves – read what’s sent out – participate in forums as we can.

Honest Feedback – We live our Covenant of Right Relations

  • We communicate our concerns directly.
  • We don’t assume – we ask.
  • We engage in mutually respectful dialogue.

Describe the worst mistake your new minister could make:

Implementing a leadership style that isn’t respectful of our traditions, collaborative in nature, or in partnership with our congregation and its lay leadership.

The Heart of the Matter — Part One: Our Congregational Profile

IMG_6994

In preparation for the MSC Forums and the candidating week, we invite you to read our Congregational Profile below, an important excerpt from our Congregational Record (CR) that defines who we are as a congregation and forms the foundation for our Ministerial Profile (coming up in Part 2).  Also included below are our congregational strengths & challenges, as well as pressing issues anticipated for the next few years.

The CR, as a whole, is a summary document based on all of the input we received over the summer during “The Big Listen” — our name for initial information gathering phase of the ministerial search process.  Data gathered include notes from our 17 Discovery Sessions that were attended by 150 people, results from the Congregational Survey completed by 455 members & friends,  and summaries of 50 one-on-one  interviews with staff & lay leaders.  Feedback received through informal conversations with individuals and groups, as well as  additional research completed with the support of church staff, also informed the development of our Congregational Record.

IMG_6970

On November 8th, at 12:30pm in the sanctuary, your Ministerial Search Committee (MSC) will be presenting “The Big Talk” to the congregation.  Due to the selection of our candidate, the MSC will be offering a series of Forums in lieu of the previously scheduled “Big Talk” on the 8th.  Please see this post for the schedule for these Forums.  The Forums will cover the results of our analysis of “The Big Listen”  leading to the development of the Congregational Record, which defines who we are as a congregation, our current needs, dreams for the future, and what we are looking for in our next Senior Minister.  We strongly encourage members to read the CR prior to attending a Forum. You can read the entire Congregational Record HERE or visit bit.ly/congregationalrecord.  We hope you will at least make time to read the excerpt from the CR below, as well as the second excerpt coming up in part two of The Heart of the Matter.

PROFILE 2Excerpt from the Congregational Record :

Above all, the people of Foothills Unitarian Church are a compassionate community that values being challenged to pursue spiritual growth and engage in meaningful justice work. We are independent thinkers with diverse opinions and beliefs who strive to work through our differences in order to maintain our strong sense of community.

We actively promote individual spiritual growth without demanding common beliefs and enjoy close relationships with each other. Our beliefs are diverse, with as many people who relate to traditional religious concepts such as “God” as who are uncomfortable with such language. Beyond Unitarian Universalism, the primary religious traditions that influence us are Humanism and Buddhism, but we are eager to explore lessons from all wisdom traditions.

Our high level of education (56% of us have post-graduate degrees) at least partially explains our thoughtful approach to spiritual journeys. We value services that include inspiring and intellectually challenging lessons from the pulpit, a large component of music, and a diverse array of spiritual practices.

Launching children and youth on their spiritual journeys is very important to us, as evidenced by high enrollment and our congregation-wide support of RE programs, including a recent elimination of fees. We also appreciate the many new avenues for adult religious education and spiritual growth available as a result of increases to our highly regarded staff and clergy over the past several years.

Being empowered and impactful are strong values within our community. In our recent survey, the most important reasons for volunteering were having a “sense there is a real need to be met” and “feeling my ideas would be welcome” (96% each).

Our staff and clergy are capable professionals, effectively managing the programs they develop while collaborating with other staff and lay leaders. In addition, there are also numerous lay leaders and congregants who enjoy working across committee and task group boundaries. We are accustomed to voicing our opinions, hearing those of others, and arriving at acceptable conclusions.

We have begun a journey to implement more effective organizational structure and systems that can better support the needs and desires of our large congregation, while maintaining small-church feelings of connectedness in community. Although we want to make this transition, we have struggled with the process, particularly with regard to adequately communicating with and considering the opinions of many individuals.

Our experiences over the first year of interim ministry highlighted the importance of open and respectful communication surrounding organizational changes, combined with consistent efforts to encourage congregational input and buy-in. Having such a highly participatory and engaged congregation makes this process both exciting and challenging. We are looking forward to continued growth in these areas with guidance from our new senior minister.

The members and friends of Foothills Unitarian Church are very proud of our caring community and optimistic for its future. This is congregation that wants to make a difference and have even greater impact in the wider community. We look to our new minister to work in partnership with us as we experience together the inevitable future changes required in becoming the church we want to be.

Congregational strengths:Strengths Weaknesses

  • Strong community of dedicated lay leaders and congregants who care deeply about their church community.

The data collected from the online Survey and Discovery Sessions (focus groups) indicate that Foothills is a committed congregation with strong support systems, such as the Caring Committee and a parish visitor program. Thirty people are currently being trained for pastoral care. Although we are independent thinkers, we are willing to participate in openly working through our disagreements. As one Survey respondent noted, “The reason I’m so passionate about my views is because I so treasure our church community and feel it’s amazingly unique and important. Love is our greatest strength.”

  • Outstanding Programs that make the congregation very proud.

Although Foothills has a long tradition of providing outstanding Religious Education and Music programs, newer programs such as small group ministry and social justice initiatives have also drawn strong support from the congregation. They are now recognized for their important contribution toward our sense of community and pride in making a meaningful difference to the wider world.

  • As evidenced in enrollment numbers as well as Survey results, we are very proud of our children and youth religious education, including the Our Whole Lives offerings.
  • Church members also noted that music is an essential part of our congregational life. Our Sunday services include our large choir singing twice monthly, as well as a great variety of instruments, vocal groups, and musical pieces. Other musical activities include choir outreach at senior care centers and a number of specialized vocal and instrumental groups.
  • Embracing the “Soul to Soul” small group ministry model, we currently offer over 29 very popular small groups designed to address the diverse needs of our large congregation.
  • Social justice volunteers played leading roles in founding new community interfaith partnerships: Faith Family Hospitality provides shelter to families experiencing homelessness by involving 27 Fort Collins congregations, and the English as a Second Language Tutoring Program serves immigrant families in conjunction with The Family Center (La Familia) and Plymouth Congregational Church.
  • Our recently revitalized environmental justice program is addressing critical issues of global warming and is being lead by young adults.
  • The “Share the Plate” program shares half of our Sunday collections with a variety of local and national organizations providing essential human services. For FY 2014-15, Foothills’ contribution to the organizations supported through this initiative was in excess of $14,000.
  • Passionate, knowledgeable and dedicated clergy and staff that is greatly appreciated by the congregation.

Our outstanding programs would not be possible without the dedicated staff to support it. The congregation publicly recognizes their value at its annual meeting by stressing the importance of providing adequate salary and benefits that go beyond the minimum UUA recommendations. Our Survey and Discovery Session comments also reinforce our commitment and support of all of our staff.

Congregational challenges:

  • Integration of new people into the life of the congregation.

We do not have a long history of welcoming programs that work to quickly integrate newcomers. This has been addressed by offering a Religious Education class during the past two years, but the biggest impact is likely to come from the recent hiring of a shared (with the UU Church of Greeley) Ministerial Resident whose focus at Foothills includes membership and pastoral care.

  • Can appear to be intolerant of Christian beliefs and conservative political viewpoints.

Some congregants have expressed their reluctance to reveal Christian beliefs and/or conservative political beliefs within the church community. Others have complained about “God talk” in sermons that don’t reflect their beliefs. Our current ministers are helping to remind us that we are a community of diverse beliefs that each have lessons to teach us all.

  • Can be protective regarding our traditions.

With no major leadership changes for about 20 years, we have developed a deep affection for many of our traditions. While most of them will remain a part of our church life, some will need to change to make room for new traditions as our membership and leadership evolve.

  • Relevance for young adults and families.

We have not yet directly addressed the changing patterns of life in America that can make it difficult for young families and young adults to participate in traditional church activities. These people need avenues of participation that are relevant to their lives and will require us to be creative and adaptable in order to meet our mission.

What congregational issues are likely to be most pressing within the next couple years:

  • Settling and supporting our new senior minister.

Because our last senior minister was with us for over 20 years, we may be resistant to changes in tradition and operating processes that are inevitable with new leadership. This is being addressed with the congregation by our current interim minister. Our new minister will become integrated most quickly if he/she uses our traditional process of mutual listening and open discussion.

  • Growing with grace.

We have clearly outgrown our current facility. It can be difficult to find space for activities, the office area is cramped, and Sunday service attendance spills into the social hall at both services. We will look to our new senior minister to help us determine our best path forward.

  • Develop our mission and a new five-year plan.

We have been working for about two years without a current long-range plan and clear mission. These must be addressed soon but will probably extend beyond a two-year period. Collective discernment on how best to address issues arising from both past and anticipated future growth must clearly be a part of this process.

  • Define required organizational changes.

Our Bylaws were written when the church was much smaller. Now that we are a big church with a large number of programs and activities as well as a more diverse membership, we are in need of a leadership structure that can provide meaningful experiences for all of its members. Our new structure must support the strong sense of community and lay leader empowerment that our Survey clearly shows we value very highly.

  • Raising the funds we need to do what we want to do.

Our members have traditionally pledged below the average UUA giving level. We need to increase this level of giving in order to support the programs and services we want to provide.

  • Creating effective communication processes.

As we have begun working on the issues noted above, it has become clear that traditional ways of communicating changes and requesting input do not always achieve their goals. In addition, our familiarity with electronic communications, from e-mail to websites to social media, ranges from none to very high. It will be important for us to develop a mix of face-to-face discussions, newsletter articles, feedback avenues, and short notifications that keep the congregation informed and engaged.

Ready? Set? TALK!

We hope YOU will get READY to attend an upcoming MSC Forum (schedule here) by reading two important documents while we get our presentation SET for our big TALK on November 8th our upcoming Forums and Candidating Week (Please note that due to the selection of our candidate, our timetable changed and we will be presenting data and sharing questions/information in Forums rather than holding a single presentation on Nov 8th).  They can be viewed by clicking on the document titles below:

  •  Congregational Record (CR)* – A summary of all the MSC has learned about who we are as a congregation and the characteristics of the person who would be an excellent match as our new senior minister.

  • Congregational Survey Results – Completed by 455 people, this survey provided an important foundation for our assessment of the congregation.  It contains essential demographic information and a clear picture of the breadth of diversity of our religious beliefs.

*See bottom of this post for links to PRINT either of these documents.

These documents are based on the tremendous amount of input gathered during “The Big Listen” and developed to summarize the results of our analysis of that data completed during “The Big Think.” While we are busy getting ready for “The Big Talk,” our in-depth presentation to the congregation on Sunday, November 8th, our MSC Forums and Candidating Week, we hope that YOU take advantage of this excellent opportunity to begin preparing for one of the most important decisions a member of our congregation can be a part of: participating in a vote to call our next senior minister.

We certainly don’t expect every member to invest the many hundreds of hours we will have leading up to our recommending an outstanding ministerial candidate who we are confident is an excellent fit for our congregation (and we won’t be recommending one unless we are!). We do hope, however, that you’ll thoughtfully consider the importance of the decision you are making. We trust that when you are eventually called upon to make a decision, your vote will be cast in light of what is for the common good of us all.

While both of the documents released last week contain valuable information, one of the best ways to discern what exactly would constitute the common good is a careful review of our Congregational Record. This is because it was developed based on all of the input we received during The Big Listen: 17 separate two-hour Discovery sessions, the survey, 50 one-on-one interviews, a fair bit of financial and historical research, and informal input received from many individuals and groups who made the time to speak with us. While there is a lot of interesting and important information in the CR, you’ll want to pay particular attention to the two summary profile sections early on: the Ministerial Profile (MP) and the Congregational Profile (CP). You may view a copy of our CR by clicking HERE.*

We hope that you will find time to review both the Congregational Record* and the Survey Results* prior to The Big Talk, the MSC Forums that will offer a comprehensive analysis being presented on November 8th at 12:30 PM in the Sanctuary. If you have any questions or comments prior to attending a Forum, the presentation on November 8th, we invite you to share them with us by email at SearchCommittee@foothillsuu.org — or drop us a note in the blue lockbox on our table in the Social Hall.

We are very appreciative of your generous participation in the search process thus far, and are looking forward to sharing with you in an upcoming MSC Forum!  in greater detail during “The Big Talk” on November 8th.
